Power Play in Western Kenya: Ayub Savula Claims Opposition Chiefs Asked Him to Whip Leaders to Skip Unity Drive Meeting
Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has revealed the influence of a prominent politician in Western Kenyan politics.
Savula alleged that top opposition leaders directed him to persuade Western Kenya politicians to skip a recent political gathering at the Kakamega Gold Hotel, organized by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
According to Savula, the meeting was considered unimportant for the Luhya community’s development.
“I have convened this meeting to give a rejoinder to what has happened today in Kakamega,” Savula said.
He elaborated on his prior consultation with the opposition chief, who was in Mombasa then.
“I consulted the Azimio leader on whether to attend the meeting or ignore it; he gave me express instructions to lobby all members of parliament from Western to skip the meeting because the meeting was not going to discuss anything tangible regarding the Luhya community,” Savula said.

Savula criticized the meeting, stating, “If there are issues regarding the development, a budget of a country is not done by a secretary general of a party. The budget is done by the executive comprising ministers and is taken to parliament for approval; it is not discussed in a hotel.”
He mentioned that the main purpose of the meeting was to undermine the current leaders of Western Kenya: Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, and Wycliffe Oparanya, the current nominee for the Cooperatives and MSMEs docket.
“Those are current leaders in government. We are standing by those leaders.”
Savula has unveiled plans for a major political event featuring Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula as the main speakers.
“We are going to convene a major meeting co-chaired by Musalia and Wetangula and all the MPs from Western province to discuss the political agenda of this community given the broad-based government that has been put in place by William Ruto and Raila Odinga,” he stated.
The changing political scene in Western Kenya underscores the region’s crucial influence in the national political arena, with leaders striving to strengthen their authority and shape their community’s future in the context of Kenya’s developing governance system.
