Moses Kuria Endorses Raila Odinga’s Call to Revisit the Bomas Draft Constitution Amid Criticism

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced his full support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s call to revisit the Bomas draft constitution. Kuria emphasized that this move was essential to establish structures for issues Kenya has been experimenting with for nearly two decades, such as forming a coalition government.

Kuria expressed his complete endorsement of Raila Odinga’s call for a return to the Bomas Draft. He pointed out that since the rejection of Bomas 19 years ago, Kenya has been stuck in a cycle of artificial experiments like the Grand Coalition, Handshake, and now the Broad-Based Government.

Kuria declared his full commitment to a National Constitutional conference focused on the Bomas Draft, stating that avoiding this inevitable step has been detrimental.

Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi criticized Kuria’s announcement, arguing that Kenya does not need a new or amended constitution but rather leaders who respect and uphold the existing one. Abdullahi highlighted that the primary issue is the political elites’ refusal to implement and adhere to the Constitution.

Abdullahi described Kuria’s tweet as a testament to the political class’s engagement in unproductive sideshows that offer no benefit to the ordinary Kenyan.

Kuria’s support came a day after Raila Odinga called for a constitutional review, asserting that it would enable Kenya to become a progressive nation. Speaking at a funeral, Raila emphasized the need to critically address some gaps in the 2010 Constitution and urged Kenyans to contribute their proposals for a better future.

Raila noted that Kenyans had gathered at the Bomas of Kenya and developed a progressive constitution, which was later compromised during the Naivasha process.

The former Prime Minister stressed that Kenya is at a critical juncture, and the right steps must be taken to secure its future. He called for the Bomas draft constitution to be reconsidered and refined to create a progressive framework for the country.
