Oparanya Breaks Silence on ODM Exit After Cabinet Nod
ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya confirmed he remains a member of the party after being appointed to the cabinet by President William Ruto.
During a press briefing on Saturday, July 27, Oparanya emphasized his commitment to the orange party even as he assumes his new position.
The ex-Kakamega governor stated that the president is creating a government of national unity, which naturally includes opposition members.
He noted, “This is our country. The president clearly mentioned forming a government of national unity. Such a government will inevitably involve opposition members.”

Oparanya added, “We haven’t abandoned ODM. We are still members, now serving the government in our respective roles.”
His statements followed ODM leader Raila Odinga’s assertion that the ODM party and the Azimio la Umoja coalition have not formed a coalition with the UDA party.
Odinga stated on Thursday, July 24, “As we clarified in our statement on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, neither the ODM Party nor Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has entered any coalition agreement with President Ruto’s UDA party.”
Oparanya’s cabinet appointment was alongside Hassan Joho, ODM chairman John Mbadi, and National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi.
Oparanya was appointed to the Ministry of Cooperatives, Joho to the Ministry of Mining, while Mbadi and Wandayi were nominated for Treasury and Energy respectively.
