Raila Details Talks He Had With Ruto Over Nomination of ODM Leaders as CSs

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has discussed his conversations with President William Ruto regarding the Cabinet nominations.

During an address in Siaya County on Saturday, July 27, Raila shared that he spoke with the President after the Cabinet’s dissolution.

At that time, Raila mentioned that he suggested to the President to appoint individuals of his choosing to fill the vacancies left by the dismissed Cabinet Secretaries.

Raila explained that the opposition planned to propose names for Cabinet positions only after a national dialogue had taken place and an agreement was reached.

However, Raila revealed that Ruto expressed a need to act quickly, as the Cabinet positions could not remain unfilled for an extended period.

Raila recounted advising Ruto that, having dismissed his Cabinet, he should appoint his people for the interim and wait for the opposition’s recommendations post-dialogue.

In response, Ruto indicated that he needed to proceed promptly with nominations due to the urgency of filling the positions, opting to appoint his team and discuss further later.

Subsequently, Ruto selected members from his party for the positions. Raila pointed out that since these names did not come from ODM, he warned Ruto against blaming the opposition if any ODM appointees underperformed.

Raila emphasized that ODM had no coalition agreement with the government and that they should not be held responsible for the performance of the appointed members.

The ODM representatives chosen for Cabinet roles include John Mbadi (Treasury), Hassan Joho (Mining), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives), and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy).

Raila urged these ODM appointees to serve the public effectively while upholding party principles.

He reiterated that ODM remains in the opposition and has put forward four demands to the government before engaging in national dialogue.

These demands include compensation for families of those killed during protests in 2023 and 2024, government coverage of medical expenses for the injured, the release of arrested individuals, and the withdrawal of charges against protestors.
