‘Unholy union’: Orengo, Wajackoyah Slam Raila-Ruto Deal

Close associates of opposition leader Raila Odinga continue to criticize the recent alliance between President William Ruto and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition leader, warning of serious repercussions.

Siaya Governor James Orengo and Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah have asserted that their colleagues’ decision to align with the government was a significant error.

Mr. Orengo argued that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) should avoid allying with the Kenya Kwanza government, citing potential negative impacts.

The county leader, who opposes the ruling party alliance, emphasized the importance of meeting Mr. Odinga’s conditions and embedding the terms of engagement in the Constitution.

โ€œWe must recognize that the current government is Kenya Kwanza’s. We should ensure that conditions are met and that engagements are legally established,โ€ Mr. Orengo stated.

He added: โ€œI saw President William Ruto visit Mombasa and refer to Hassan Joho as his Cabinet Secretary. During our coalition with the late Mwai Kibaki, the Constitution protected against the dismissal of ministers without consulting Raila Odinga. What if President Ruto decides to fire the CSs like he did recently? We must ensure we address these crucial aspects rather than being overly enthusiastic,โ€ Mr. Orengo warned.

Mr. Orengo also advised ODM leaders not to underestimate Gen Z, stressing their important role in the negotiations.

Roots Party leader Prof. Wajackoyah emphasized that they will not be part of President Ruto’s government under any circumstances.

โ€œWe cannot benefit from the struggles of the young people who protested. Their sacrifices must be respected, and they must be included in all plans. Leaders have betrayed Gen Z and are absconding with their future,โ€ said the former Presidential candidate, affirming his stance against being on the wrong side of history.

Prof. Wajackoyah also criticized the church for losing its focus by urging the public to pray for peace.

Meanwhile, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga refrained from joining the ODM candidate debate and instead encouraged youth to register as voters and participate on election day.

โ€œThe actions of Gen Zs were commendable. My advice is for them to vote when the time comes. The rest will be addressed by Mr. Odinga during his visit,โ€ the lawmaker said.

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, while addressing mourners, urged constituents to support nominees Opiyo Wandayi (Energy) and John Mbadi (Treasury).

โ€œOur primary responsibility is to represent the interests of the people, as others in different regions are doing,โ€ Mr. Atandi said.

Regarding the demonstrations, the legislator commended Gen Zs for their role in driving change in the country.

โ€œI am pleased with the youths for their involvement in peaceful protests. We pioneered such actions; it’s not new. Now, everyone seeks to leverage the opportunities created by these circumstances,โ€ Mr. Atandi noted.

He further stated: โ€œWe must be wise. Let us act prudently, and as we have achieved some goals, let us allow new leaders to step up. To the two individuals from the lake region joining the government, I encourage you to help create opportunities for our people.โ€

ODM Executive Director Mr. Oduor Ongwen highlighted that the Gen Z agenda aligns with the Orange Party’s goals: releasing detainees, dropping charges, compensating victims, and addressing misconduct by rogue officers.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Matthew Owili urged the opposition to act wisely and focus on the public’s desires.

โ€œWe owe a debt of gratitude to young people, especially Gen Z, for restoring direction to the country. They demand we tackle issues like tribalism, corruption, and integrityโ€”matters we cannot ignore,โ€ he said.
