4 Bold Moves Gen Z Can Make After Political Betrayal, Says UDA MP

Gen Z is frustrated after President William Ruto’s recent Cabinet nominations failed to meet their demands.

The youth had called for a complete overhaul of the Cabinet. Instead, President Ruto appointed some opposition members to the Cabinet and reinstated previously dismissed Cabinet Secretaries.

This move has sparked outrage among the younger generation, who feel betrayed by the opposition leaders they believe are reaping the benefits of their labor following weeks of anti-government demonstrations.

In response, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, a member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has outlined several strategies for Gen Z to effectively push for governmental reforms.

Maina emphasized the importance of strategic engagement in the political arena, recognizing the unique position and potential influence of the youth movement and their numbers.

“There are only two ways to participate in government,” Maina stated.

“You either are in the system or run the system. I understand your quest to be faceless, tribe-less, leader-less et al. That amorphous nature is essential for the survival of the movement. However, it is also a weak link in your engagement plan.”

Maina suggested that the youth should have directly engaged with President Ruto, presenting a well-considered plan and proposing potential cabinet nominees to advance their agenda.

She noted that the president had been open to dialogue but was forced to seek political alliances due to the youth’s refusal to engage. “You had the attention of the political class and the president, who was coming from a good place,” Maina explained.

“When you refused to engage, you left him no option but to seek political alliances to bolster support across the board. That is the game of politics. It’s purely driven by interests and self-preservation.”

Looking ahead, Maina highlighted four critical points that Gen Z must consider as they plan their next steps in the political landscape:

Sustaining Momentum: Gen Z must demonstrate their ability to maintain momentum in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. Consistent and organized efforts are crucial to keep their movement alive and relevant.

Voter Registration: The youth must prioritize registering as voters for the upcoming elections. Ensuring high registration rates will strengthen their collective bargaining power.

Voter Turnout: Beyond registration, Gen Z needs to turn out in large numbers on election day. High voter turnout will amplify their voice and influence in the electoral process.

Non-Tribal Voting: Gen Z must strive to vote based on issues rather than tribal affiliations. This approach can help transcend traditional political divides and foster a more inclusive and progressive political environment.

“Mass euphoria notwithstanding, they have to be weighed for them to count,” Maina concluded.
