“Stop The Protests, Give Ruto Time,” Archbishop Ole Sapit Tells Kenyan Youth

Clergy members from the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) have called on Kenya’s young anti-government demonstrators to halt their protests and allow President William Ruto the opportunity to address their concerns.

ACK Archbishop Joseph Ole Sapit led the clergy in praising the demonstrators, noting the significant impact their protests had on the Kenya Kwanza administration, such as the dismissal of the Cabinet and the replacement of former Police Inspector General Japhet Koome.

However, the Archbishop emphasized that President Ruto needs additional time to tackle the new issues raised during the protests.

“We urge the protesters to pause their demonstrations and give the government time to address the extensive list of demands. The President has already started responding by dismissing several Cabinet Secretaries, enacting the IEBC Amendment Bill 2024, and addressing the resignation of the Police IG,” Ole Sapit stated at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi.

“Please refrain from actions that could undermine the very future we are striving for. We, as a church, will observe and report on the progress made and insist on the implementation of commitments.”

Ole Sapit also called on President Ruto to act promptly on additional public demands, including reducing government spending and the wage bill, streamlining government size, focusing on essential services, and freezing accounts of corruption suspects.

“The government must, within the next week, develop and publicly disclose an implementation plan for these demands. The promised job creation for youth should be backed by real actions,” he said.

“We insist that the government halt further tax impositions, especially the new housing levy and the increased fuel levy, which taxpayers find unjust and lacking in value.”

Ole Sapit further requested that President Ruto revise the current university funding model, which he believes has made higher education less accessible to deserving students.

“We advocate for a comprehensive review of the funding model to ensure it is fair and promotes equity,” he said.

Additionally, he urged Ruto to ensure that future Cabinet appointments are made based on integrity and merit.

“Going forward, the President should heed the voices of Kenyans and select Cabinet members and commissioners who exhibit high integrity and competence,” the Archbishop advised.

“Appointments should be based on merit and proven track records, avoiding the rewarding of political allies and cronies.”
