Grisly Discovery: Bloodied Hammer and Pillow Found in Kware Murder Probe

Detectives revisited the residence of the prime suspect in the Kware killings, where they found a blood-stained hammer among other incriminating items.

The investigation team also uncovered a dressing mirror with fingerprints, a mattress, a blood-stained pillow, a red t-shirt, a pair of pliers, two kitchen knives, four pairs of women’s shoes, and a gunnysack.

The prime suspect, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, was present during the search, which took place on a Wednesday morning and lasted five hours.

Additionally, the detectives found sisal and manila ropes, along with a notebook containing hospital receipts in a woman’s name.

A team was dispatched to the hospital to verify if the woman had been treated there.

Khalusha is suspected of being responsible for the gruesome murders of at least 42 women in the city, claiming he met all his victims on the streets, with some of them selling airtime in the area.

The detectives concluded that his house was the primary crime scene after discovering blood stains on the walls and floor, which Khalusha said were from some of his victims.

In a confession recorded at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Khalusha admitted to killing ten women in the current year alone.

The most recent victim was murdered on July 11, just one day before the bodies were discovered at the Kware dump site in Mukuru slums, Nairobi.

According to the police, Khalusha claimed he had unprotected sexual intercourse with all the victims, promising them Sh500 for the act, which he never paid.

He allegedly strangled them during the process, left their bodies on nylon paper in his house, and later dismembered them before dumping the remains at the dump site about 500 meters from his house.

He occasionally used the hammer in these crimes.

Khalusha revealed that he was born in Vihiga in 1991 and moved to Migori with his mother three years later after his father’s death.

Most of his victims were women from the slum where he lived. He allegedly confessed to killing more than 20 women in 2023 and ten in 2024.

Police reported that Khalusha would take his victims’ belongings, such as mobile phones, clothes, cash, bags, and other valuables, and either give them to friends or sell them.

He claimed that his actions were driven by hatred for his late wife, who had squandered her businesses twice.

The police are now attempting to document all the victims, facing potential complications in identification.

Alongside Khalusha, another person of interest was arrested at City Cabanas on Monday for possessing a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims, Roselyn Akoth Ogongo.

Ogongo’s remains were identified by her family at the Nairobi Funeral Home.

During their statements to homicide detectives, Ogongo’s family recognized her handbag among the items recovered from Khalusha’s residence.

A sister of the deceased recalled that the last time she saw her sister, she was carrying that handbag.

The investigation led to the arrest of another suspect at City Cabanas, who directed detectives to a house in Mukuru kwa Reuben, where 154 used mobile phones were found.

The suspect admitted to purchasing phones from Khalusha, suggesting his involvement in the murder cartel.

The DCI confirmed that one of the nine identification cards found in Khalusha’s house belonged to Imelda Judith Karenya, alleged to be Khalusha’s wife and first victim. The murders occurred between 2022 and July 11, 2024.

Khalusha claimed in court that the police coerced his confession. His lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, argued that Khalusha required urgent medical attention due to alleged torture and molestation during detention.

The police denied these allegations and stated their intention to subject Khalusha to mental evaluations and further investigations.
