Quake Rattles Nairobi: Tremors Shake City and Surrounds

Residents throughout Nairobi reported seismic movements on Tuesday night, raising concerns about structural damage and safety.

Reports of aftershocks came in from areas including Ruaka, Lower Kabete, and Kangemi, among others, by the time of publishing.

Volcano Discovery, a lithosphere information website, mentioned there are no details yet on the possible quake’s magnitude or depth, first reported around 8:31 pm.

“If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge shortly. The location, magnitude, and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model,” states the Volcano Discovery website.

“They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives precise data from a seismological agency. Check back soon and stay safe.”

Google, however, reports the tremor originated 38 kilometers from Nairobi with a magnitude of 4.2.

The California Earthquake Authority describes a magnitude IV earthquake as moderate, typically felt by many indoors and a few outdoors during the day. At night, some may wake up from the shaking.

“Dishes, windows, and doors are disturbed; walls make cracking sounds. It feels like a heavy truck hitting the building. Standing motor cars are rocked noticeably,” explains the authority’s website.

Volcano Discovery also notes that since 2022, Kenya has experienced three earthquakes with magnitudes above 4 and up to 5.0.
