Senate Urges Government to Cover Costs for Protest Victims and Address Public Concerns

The Senate is urging the government to cover hospital expenses for those injured and to pay for funerals for those who died during the anti-government protests that swept across the nation.

On Tuesday, the Senate highlighted the concerns voiced by the youth and other citizens regarding corruption, impunity, and incompetence within state and public offices.

Protesters also raised issues about the lavish lifestyles of public officials, unemployment, and the high cost of living, as noted in the order paper.

Senators pointed out that these issues, among others, have plagued the national economy.

The Senate expressed concern over the loss of lives, injuries, and property damage resulting from the protests.

They urged all government bodies, including ministries, departments, agencies, and constitutional commissions, to implement austerity measures in their operations. They emphasized the need for the Anti-Graft Commission to strengthen its efforts against corruption.

“We urge the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other multi-sector government agencies in governance, justice, law, and order to intensify their efforts to combat corruption,” the order paper stated.

The Senate also called on the National Police Service (NPS) to stop abductions, unlawful arrests, and extrajudicial killings, and to show restraint in handling peaceful and unarmed protesters.

They also appealed for the release of all individuals arrested for organizing and participating in peaceful protests against the Finance Bill.

Furthermore, the Senate urged the Judiciary to fast-track all cases arising from the protests.

“The Judiciary should prioritize and expedite all court cases related to the enactment of the Finance Bill and the resulting demonstrations.”

The Senate acknowledged all the country’s challenges and committed to making necessary recommendations to address them.
