ODM Issues Ultimatum to Ruto After Dismissing All CSs

ODM urged President William Ruto to dismiss Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and the Nairobi Region Police Commander. They also called for action against police officers allegedly involved in harming protesters during recent demonstrations.

The party emphasized the need for government compensation for all victims of the protests, including those who were injured or killed. While ODM acknowledged the recent firing of nearly all cabinet secretaries as a positive step, they highlighted widespread public concern about lingering fears.

“Ruto must immediately dismiss the IG of Police, the Nairobi Police commander, and apprehend all officers implicated in the deaths of over 200 peaceful protesters since last year,” ODM stated. They additionally called for a national amnesty for individuals arrested or charged in connection with protests, along with compensation for victims of police brutality.

Despite their stance, Edwin Sifuna’s faction expressed readiness to collaborate with President Ruto’s administration to implement measures aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability. ODM outlined these measures to address longstanding issues such as unemployment, justice, equality, corruption, and negative ethnicity.

“This dialogue, in our perspective, must precede discussions on the future structure of our national governance,” Sifuna emphasized. “As a party, ODM has consistently embraced difficult conversations whenever the nation’s destiny is at stake.”

ODM emphasized that addressing these pressing issues was not merely about supporting the current regime. Sifuna asserted that the nation’s interests transcended any individual or group.

“We welcome these developments, hopeful that they will initiate sincere efforts to tackle the concerns voiced by disillusioned and frustrated youth,” ODM concluded.
