Outrage Erupts at JKUAT Over Suspicious Death of Student Denzel Omondi
Hundreds of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) students took to the streets on Friday, expressing their outrage and sorrow over the suspicious death of fellow student Denzel Omondi.
The protest began as students obstructed parts of Thika Super Highway, marching together towards the Juja Police Station to demand justice and answers for their deceased comrade.
Chants of “Justice for Denzel!” filled the air, creating an electrifying and emotionally charged atmosphere.
Online videos depict some students being pulled out of class to join the protests, with high emotions evident as they held placards and banners, some displaying haunting images of Omondi.
The tragic death of the 23-year-old has sparked strong demands for justice and accountability.
Omondi, a third-year student, was last seen alive during a major anti-government protest at the National Assembly on June 25, 2024. His vibrant presence, captured in a video from inside Parliament, turned to despair when he disappeared the next day.

After days of uncertainty and desperate searches by his family, his body was found on July 6, floating lifelessly in an abandoned quarry in Juja.
An autopsy revealed that Omondi had drowned, but disturbing findings, including bruises on his head and legs, suggested foul play, casting doubt on the official explanation. His family and human rights advocates vehemently reject the autopsy results, insisting he was murdered.
Amnesty International Kenya and other human rights organizations have joined the call for a comprehensive investigation into Omondi’s death.
They demand a transparent investigation, urging authorities to go beyond the initial findings to uncover the truth. Their advocacy reflects a nation’s struggle with deep-seated issues of governance and human rights.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also intervened, conducting a site visit to examine the events leading up to Omondiโs death.
Investigators from the Juja Police Station have been collecting statements from family members, attempting to piece together the timeline and circumstances surrounding this tragic loss.
