Anti-Ruto Protester Duncan Onsongo, Missing, Found Dead at City Mortuary
The search for a missing family member from Kisii County concluded tragically at Nairobi’s City Mortuary, where the lifeless body of their son was discovered on July 2, 2024.
Dancun Onsongo, aged 26, was last seen alive participating in youth-led protests against President William Ruto’s administration in Mlolongo, Machakos County, where he worked as a fruit vendor.
His family, after an exhaustive search, located his body at City Mortuary on July 5. They found him with severe burns on his face and chest, believed to be from a teargas canister explosion during the protests.
According to Geoffrey Mokoro, a relative, neighbors saw him leave for the protests despite their warnings, and he never returned.

Dancun, the eldest of ten children from the Amabuko sub-Location, was a vital support for his family. His parents, facing financial difficulties, appealed for government assistance to bury their son, describing him as a dependable mechanic and driver who struggled to find employment due to high living costs.
His aunt, Hellen Nyakerario, highlighted Dancun’s role as the family’s breadwinner and sought help from well-wishers to transport his body to Kisii for burial.
Ward Representative Wycliff Siocha demanded transparency from the government regarding Dancun’s death, criticizing the lack of official communication or condolences to the grieving family.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported 39 deaths and 361 injuries during nationwide protests against the Finance Bill and government actions, blaming the police for excessive force against peaceful demonstrators, medical personnel, lawyers, journalists, and safe spaces like churches and medical centers.
