President Ruto to Sign Historic IEBC Amendment Bill, 2024, Following Bipartisan Dialogue

President William Ruto is set to sign the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024, on Tuesday.

This move will initiate the process of appointing the selection panel responsible for recruiting new commissioners for the electoral body.

According to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, this IEBC Bill is the first to be processed by Parliament following the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco) report.

The report resulted from a bipartisan effort, including leaders from President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza and opposition leader Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper party, led Odinga’s team, while National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungโ€™wah headed President Rutoโ€™s team in the discussions.

Mohamed mentioned that President Ruto has invited leaders of parliamentary parties, both from within and outside Parliament, to join the signing event on Tuesday, describing it as historic.

โ€œThe first Bill passed by Parliament based on the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco) report will be signed into law at the KICC,โ€ Mohamed stated on Monday evening.

In the Committee, Kenya Kwanza was represented by Ichungโ€™wah, with Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire as his deputy.

Other members included Senator Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), Hassan Omar (EALA), and Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga.

The Azimio team was led by Musyoka, with Opiyo Wandayi, the Leader of the Minority in the National Assembly (Ugunja), as his deputy.

Other members of the Azimio team were DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who did not sign the report, Amina Mnyazi (Malindi), and Nyamira Senator Okongโ€™o Omogeni.

Wandayi told Gossipa2z.com that they had received formal invitations to the event.

Last week, Wandayi urged the President to implement the Nadco report before initiating another round of dialogue in the country, following President Ruto’s announcement of a multi-sectoral committee to address issues raised during recent anti-tax protests.

Wandayi expressed disappointment that almost seven months after the Nadco team presented its report, it had not been fully implemented.

“Out of the nine Bills crafted by the Nadco team, only the IEBC amendment Bill has been implemented to my knowledge, while the other eight are still pending,” Wandayi remarked.

Nadco was formed last year after former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo mediated a truce between President Ruto and Odinga following weeks of anti-government protests.
