DCI Launches Probe into Alleged Purchase of Pistol Used in Tom Mboya’s Assassination by Elderly Man

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has initiated an investigation following a report in the Saturday Nation dated July 6th, 2024.

The article claims that a 92-year-old man, an Embu county resident purchased the pistol used in the assassination of a renowned Kenyan statesman and the late Minister for Economic Development and National Planning, Tom Mboya.

The DCI has affirmed that necessary action will be taken once the investigation is complete.

โ€œThe attention of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been drawn to an article in the Saturday Nation dated July 6th, 2024. The article reports that a 92-year-old man purchased the pistol that was used in the killing of Tom Mboya, a trade unionist, educator, Pan-Africanist, author, former minister, and statesman.”

“The DCI has initiated an investigation and necessary action will be taken once the investigation is complete,โ€ the DCI assured in a statement on their official social media pages.

The assassination of Thomas Joseph Mboya on July 5, 1969, remains one of Kenyaโ€™s most enigmatic and consequential murders.

Mboya, a prominent trade unionist, educator, Pan-Africanist, author, and Cabinet Minister, was gunned down in broad daylight in Nairobiโ€™s central business district.

Despite the passage of 55 years, the true motive and the individuals behind this cold-blooded murder have never been fully explained.

The only person directly linked to the assassination was Isaac Nahashon Njenga Njoroge, who was charged with Mboyaโ€™s murder on July 21, 1969.

Njoroge, alongside Gitonga Gathanju and Ndwiga Muruathika, were part of the KANU youth wingers, representing their respective regions.

For the first time, Ndwiga Kathamba Muruathika has spoken out, claiming his involvement in the assassination plot.

At 92, Muruathika has provided a startling account that adds new dimensions to the historical narrative.

According to Muruathika, Tom Mboya’s problems originated from individuals who coveted his political position, particularly those from Kiambu.

In an interview, Muruathika alleged that Mboya’s intent to exert control and destabilize the Mau Mau movement led to the decision to eliminate him.

“They organized how this man would be killed, but I was not told where the instructions came from. When they organized how to kill Mboya, I organized how I was going to escape and go home so that when he was shot, I was not there. I am the one who went for the guns at the Somali border,” Muruathika recounted.

In a flashback, the old man claimed to have been among the three hitmen tasked to trail Tom Mboya.
