Senator Paul Karungo Urges President Ruto: Embrace TikTok to Connect with Gen-Z, X-Space Kuna Matusi Mingi Sana
In recent weeks, Kenya has witnessed a surge of youth-led protests fueled by discontent over high taxation and allegations of police brutality.
Unlike previous movements, these protests are notably leaderless, presenting a unique challenge for the government in engaging with the demonstrators.
Amidst this backdrop, Senator Paul Karungo has emerged with unconventional advice for President Ruto: embrace TikTok over traditional platforms like Twitter’s “X Space.”
In a passionate address to the assembly, Senator Karungo argued that TikTok offers a more authentic channel to communicate directly with Kenya’s Generation Z, the driving force behind the protests.

“Madam Speaker, when we talk to Gen Z, we must ensure it’s a genuine dialogue,” Senator Karungo emphasized. “On X Space, we only hear voices without seeing faces. We risk speaking to the same voices of the past, not truly hearing Gen Z’s concerns. That’s why I urge our leaders to use TikTok. There, you see them, and they see you. Gen Z is not afraid to be seen; they’re on the streets in broad daylight, fighting for their voices to be heard.”
His recommendation underscores a shift in how governments worldwide engage with digitally savvy youth populations.
TikTok, known for its interactive and visual nature, allows for real-time interaction through live broadcasts and engaging content formats like “tap-tap” interactions.
