Police Teargas Incident Forces Passengers to Evacuate Super Metro Bus During Anti-Finance Bill Protests(Video)

Passengers were forced to evacuate after police released a teargas canister inside a Super Metro bus during the anti-Finance Bill protests on Thursday, June 20, in the Central Business District (CBD).

The incident, occurring around midday near Imenti House, was recorded by bystanders who captured footage of passengers rushing to safety as teargas filled the bus.

Some passengers were seen escaping the suffocating conditions by leaping out of the bus windows.

The driver of the bus was also compelled to abandon the vehicle due to the tear gas.

Reports indicate the bus had just departed from the stage near Archives in the Central Business District, en route to Westlands.

Following the incident, Kenyans criticized the police, arguing that teargassing the bus was unwarranted as the passengers were not involved in the protest.

Additionally, the Super Metro management condemned the police action, announcing that a detailed statement would be issued soon.

“We condemn this act and will state the day,” read part of their statement.

During the protests, which began on Tuesday, June 18, police have faced accusations of using excessive force.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) also warned the police against excessive force, noting that it was investigating multiple complaints from Kenyans.

“Following its monitoring operation, the authority recommends that the Inspector General of Police ensures police officers in operations are properly and adequately equipped for their safety.

“The authority also recommends that NPS enhances its technology-driven surveillance capabilities, including the use of drone technology and body cameras for improved accountability during public order management,” IPOA stated.
