Tragic Incident: Makadara Chief Magistrate Monica Kivuti Succumbs to Gunshot Injuries in Courtroom Shooting
Makadara Chief Magistrate Monica Kivuti has tragically died from injuries inflicted by a police officer’s gunfire.
The magistrate was shot on Thursday, June 13, during an open-court session after delivering a ruling involving the officer’s wife.
After the incident, Kivuti was taken to Nairobi Hospital for treatment, where she eventually passed away.
Confirming the incident, Chief Justice Martha Koome stated that Monica Kivuti’s body has been transferred to Lee Funeral Home, and the family is beginning burial preparations.
“The Judiciary family stands together in this deeply traumatic time and calls for sensitivity and compassion as we share in grief,” CJ Koome expressed.
“A comprehensive statement from the Judiciary Leadership Team, currently in a meeting, will be issued soon,” she added.
Reports indicate that Kivuti was shot in the chest during the incident.
The OCS who shot her also died after being shot by officers who swiftly intervened.

In the court case, the officer’s wife faced charges of obtaining Ksh2.9 million through pretenses.
Upon learning of the magistrate’s shooting, CJ Koome ordered the closure of Makadara Law Courts until June 17 for security reinforcement.
“All matters at Makadara Law Courts will be handled virtually, with those requiring physical appearances moved to Milimani Law Courts,” CJ Koome announced.
Martha Koome also mandated that only accredited security personnel are allowed to carry arms within the court premises.
The Inspector General’s office was instructed to review courtroom security protocols with the National Council of Administration of Justice to improve the handling of accused individuals.
