Algeria Backs Raila Odinga’s Bid for African Union Commission Chairmanship

Former Prime Minister Raila Odingaโ€™s bid to chair the African Union Commission (AUC) gained significant momentum as Algeria pledged its support.

President William Ruto, attending the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, secured Algeria’s backing during a sideline meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Dr. Ruto announced this development through his X handle, formerly known as Twitter, after meeting with the Algerian President.

โ€œI have discussed with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria, on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in Apulia, Italy has pledged support for Kenyaโ€™s Africa Commission chairmanship bid,โ€ stated President Ruto.

Securing support from the Northern region, which plays a crucial role in the upcoming AUC election scheduled for February next year, marks a significant win for Mr. Odinga.

Dr. Ruto emphasized that Kenya and Algeria share similar views on reforming the African Union and the International Financial Architecture to foster equity and inclusion.

Algeria’s pledged support is especially valuable following Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo’s commitment to support Mr. Odinga’s candidacy.

Dr. Ruto expressed gratitude to Algeria for its support in Kenya’s agricultural sector, particularly in providing fertilizer.

โ€œWe are also thankful to Algeria for her financial support for the Kenya-led UN Security mission for Haiti,โ€ he stated.

Dr. Ruto supports Mr. Odinga’s continental ambitions, and his administration has established a joint secretariat to spearhead the campaign.

Rwandaโ€™s Paul Kagame, Ugandaโ€™s Yoweri Museveni, and South Africaโ€™s Cyril Ramaphosa have also endorsed Mr. Odingaโ€™s candidacy.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi recently held a joint press conference with Mr. Odinga, indicating that Odinga would officially submit his candidacy by the end of the month.

“We have a visionary leader to elevate the African Union to new heights. We do not doubt that the candidate will pursue the vision,” Mudavadi stated at the press conference.
