How Wife’s Cancelled Bond Prompted Slain Londiani OCS to Shoot Magistrate

New information has surfaced about the incident that led Londiani’s Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS) to shoot and seriously injure a magistrate at Makadara Law Court, before being killed by his colleagues on Thursday.

Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, 55, was shot and killed by his colleagues on Thursday afternoon shortly after he attacked and wounded Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti.

Kipruto had traveled from Londiani, Kericho to attend a court case involving his sick wife, Jenniffer Wairimu, 48, who was accused of obtaining money by pretenses amounting to Sh2.9 million.

Wairimu had requested to be released on cash bail, but the magistrate denied the request due to her previous absences from court sessions because of illness. Upon appearing in court on Thursday, her bail was revoked, and she was ordered to be remanded at Langata Womenโ€™s Prisons.

This decision enraged Kipruto, who entered the court through the magistrate’s door and shot Kivuti, injuring her in the chest and left hip.

Kipruto’s colleagues at the scene then shot and killed him in a tent used as a courtroom. Three other officers were also injured during the incident: one was shot in the left eye, another in the left leg, and the third in the left hand. All injured officers were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

Police recovered a Jericho pistol belonging to the deceased officer at the scene. Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei confirmed the injured are stable and receiving treatment.

โ€œWe are reviewing various measures following the incident to ensure everyone’s safety,โ€ Bungei said.

The Judiciary expressed shock and sadness over the shooting. Chief Registrar Winfrida Mokaya stated that during an open court session, the Magistrate revoked the bond for an accused who had failed to provide satisfactory explanations for missing court dates.

โ€œImmediately after this decision was announced, someone shot the Magistrate, injuring her in the hip. Police officers present responded and neutralized the shooter, and the magistrate was taken to the hospital for treatment,โ€ she explained.

Mokaya assured Judicial Officers, staff, and court users of their safety and security in all judicial premises.

“We will enhance our security protocols for civilians visiting our courts and for security officers who visit under circumstances that do not require them to be armed,” she added.
