Investigation Launched into Death of NIS Assistant Director Tom Adala: Parliament Seeks Answers

Parliament plans to investigate the death of Tom Adala, an Assistant Director at the National Intelligence Service (NIS), who passed away on June 5, 2024.

MP Samuel Atandi requested the National Assembly’s Committee on Administration and Internal Security to provide details regarding the circumstances surrounding Mr Adala’s death.

Mr. Atandi seeks clarification from the committee on whether Mr. Adala could have been reassigned within the service and requests information on the legal and policy framework governing such reassignments.

Additionally, the lawmaker wants the committee to explain the rationale behind Mr Adala’s reassignment and to verify reports of stress and discrimination based on ethnicity experienced by Mr Adala at NIS.

Mr. Atandi also asked for a status report on the investigation into Mr. Adala’s death, including a timeline for its completion and the expected release of findings for the benefit of Mr. Adala’s family and friends.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangโ€™ula, referred the matter to the Committee on Internal Security, chaired by MP Gabriel Tongoyo, which will summon relevant stakeholders.

Tom Adala was discovered deceased on June 5, 2024, at his residence in Kirichwa Villas, Kilimani, Nairobi.

Reports suggest that Mr Adala took his own life due to work-related depression, stress, and humiliation.

MP Atandi, speaking highly of Mr Adala’s dedication as a public servant, emphasized the necessity for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Mr Atandi stressed the importance of ensuring justice for Mr Adala’s family and addressing any workplace factors that may have contributed to his tragic death, to uphold the integrity of NIS and other national security institutions.

Until his passing, Mr Adala served as an assistant director overseeing counter-violent extremism at NIS headquarters in Ruaraka, Nairobi.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mr Adala died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dr. Johansen Oduor, the Chief Government Pathologist, conducted the autopsy at Lee Funeral Home and determined that Mr Adala succumbed to a single gunshot wound to his head.

Preliminary police investigations indicated that Mr Adala shot himself on the right side of his head using a pistol, with the bullet exiting on the left side, amidst his battle with depression.
