Ian Njoroge Was Molested, Mistreated By Police During Arrest; Court Told

The defense team for assault suspect Ian Njoroge claimed in court on Tuesday that the officers who arrested him treated him inhumanely.

In front of Magistrate BenMark at the Milimani law courts, attorneys Duncan Okatch and Vincent Lempaa asserted that Njoroge, 19, was abused in his home during the arrest.

A short video of Njoroge being interrogated was shown in court, which the prosecution used as evidence of mistreatment, highlighting that the officers insulted him.

The defense argued that Njoroge was mishandled by the complainant, describing the treatment he received during the arrest.

They further emphasized that Njoroge, a first-year university student, was arrested at his parents’ home, beaten at the station, and his clothes were bloodstained.

Njoroge pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery with violence, causing grievous harm, and resisting arrest.

He is accused of committing these offenses on Sunday at Kamiti Road in Kasarani, where he allegedly assaulted a police officer during a traffic stop.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) requested a three-day detention for Njoroge to allow the investigating officer time to prepare an affidavit.

The court was informed that the investigating officer, assigned the case the previous day, needed more time to complete the statements, obtain expert reports, and file the affidavit. Thus, the DPP objected to Njoroge’s release on bail.

The court granted the prosecution one day to detain Njoroge at the Industrial Area prison and ordered he be escorted to Kenyatta Hospital, accompanied by a parent.
