Musalia Mudavadi Announces Merger Talks Between ANC and UDA

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced on Saturday that his party, Amani National Congress (ANC), is in merger discussions with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

At his Kakamega County home on Sunday, Musalia explained that the decision aims to ensure political sustainability.

He reminded ANC supporters opposed to the merger that they had also doubted his government role when he joined Kenya Kwanza in 2022.

โ€œThere are merger talks permitted by the Political Parties Act,โ€ Mudavadi stated, emphasizing that the provision allows parties to unite for mutual benefit.

Mudavadi, also the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, added that Kenyans shouldn’t be surprised by the merger as political parties often form coalitions.

โ€œAzimio and Kenya Kwanza are coalitions of parties and can merge,โ€ he justified.

Mudavadi was unclear about whether the merger would result in a common name or if ANC would fall under UDA.

Regarding ANC’s motivation to merge with UDA, Mudavadi suggested it was part of future political strategies.

โ€œSo when I say ANC is in merger talks, it’s not a small matter, we’re planning for the future,โ€ he told his supporters.

Mudavadi, UDA, and Ford Kenya formed Kenya Kwanza, which later included other political parties.

The PCS did not confirm if Ford Kenya, led by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, was involved in the merger.

Musalia’s decision to merge with UDA comes amid reported tensions within the ruling party, between supporters of President William Ruto and those aligned with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
