Sakaja and Gachagua Ally Factions Spark Chaos in UDA Party Elections

Supporters of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja clashed with those of Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party elections in Nairobi on Friday afternoon.

The disagreement erupted when some party members aligned with MP Gakuya tried to prevent the Governor’s supporters from participating in the elections.

This led to physical altercations among Sakaja’s backers, prompting election officials to temporarily halt the voting process.

Additionally, certain party members accused election officials of irregularities, claiming they allowed non-party members to partake in the elections.

To restore order, police swiftly intervened, dispersing the fighting party members by deploying tear gas canisters.

Gakuya’s supporters vocally expressed their discontent, calling for Sakaja’s removal.

One voter recounted arriving early at the polling center only to witness the outbreak of conflict instigated by certain local leaders, necessitating police intervention.

Some voters, while decrying the turmoil, urged party leadership to address and penalize those responsible for such disturbances.

This incident adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding the UDA party and its leadership.

The elections occurred amidst the backdrop of the UDA Party’s National Elections Board dismissing Secretary General Malala’s attempt to postpone party primaries in five counties, including Nairobi, West Pokot, Narok, Busia, and Homa Bay, as invalid.
