The African Union has outlined the procedure for the African Union Commission leadership elections scheduled for February 2025.

All eight senior leadership roles, including the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and six Commissioner posts, are open for candidate submissions.

According to the AU’s statement, the elections will adhere to the principle of inter-regional rotation, with the Eastern region nominating candidates for the Chairperson role.

Kenya has nominated opposition leader Raila Odinga for the Chairperson position, generating significant interest in the country.

Meanwhile, the Northern region will submit candidates for the Deputy Chairperson role, with both regions required to propose both female and male candidates.

The AU has set August 6, 2024, as the submission deadline for the regions.

Following submissions, candidates will undergo pre-selection by a panel of five, aided by an independent African consultancy firm, to vet the candidatures.

The panel includes Prof. Paul Ngarambe from Burundi for the Central Region, H.E. Amb. Konjit SineGiorgis from Ethiopia for the Eastern Region, H.E. Amb. Nozipho Joyce Mxakato-Diseko from South Africa for the Southern Region, and H.E. Amb. Patrick Hayford from Ghana for the Western Region.

The Northern region has yet to complete consultations and nominate its representative.

Approved candidates for the Chairperson position must submit a curriculum vitae and vision statement addressing the AU’s most pressing issues.

Following a tradition started in 2017, candidates for the Chairperson role will participate in a televised debate, MjadalaAfrika, where they will present their vision and implementation plans.

The AU stated that all Chairperson candidates will participate in a live televised debate to present their visions and ideas for implementing Agenda 2063.

After the debate, during the AU summit, members will conduct a secret ballot election process.

Kenya’s candidate, Raila Odinga, will compete against candidates from Somalia, Djibouti, and Seychelles.
