Kenya Implements New Policy Banning Politicians from Using Military Assets

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced on Wednesday, May 29, a new policy prohibiting politicians from using military assets, including Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) helicopters, for their political endeavors.

During an interview with Citizen TV, Duale emphasized that KDF assets are strictly designated for transporting soldiers who protect the country.

This new regulation limits politicians who previously relied on KDF helicopters for nationwide travel.

Duale clarified, “We have established a policy in KDF, prohibiting the transportation of politicians. Helicopters have specific functions within KDF.”

He further explained that all KDF assets, including helicopters, are dedicated to military operations and troop transportation to ensure national security.

However, Duale noted that he and Interior CS Kithure Kindiki are exempt from this policy when conducting operations in the North Rift or other insecure areas.

He stated, “For operations, I will use military assets, and my colleague CS for Interior will also utilize our assets when heading to insecure regions like the North Rift.”

On the investigation of former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Francis Ogolla, Duale mentioned that the investigation team is diligently working to ensure a thorough inquiry.

He revealed that the team traveled to the US to consult with the manufacturer of the chopper involved in the crash.

Duale assured, “As the president promised, we will provide a comprehensive report. Our team in the US is gathering all necessary information and recommendations, which will determine if the cause was mechanical or otherwise.”

He added that the report would be presented to the Defence Council, the Commander in Chief, Kenyan taxpayers, and Ogollaโ€™s family and friends.

Addressing concerns about the condition of military equipment, Duale refuted claims of worn-out assets, mentioning his frequent use of the same chopper that crashed.

“I used the aircraft involved in Ogollaโ€™s crash numerous times, over 15 times. Prof Kindiki, IG Koome, and I used it for operational areas. Itโ€™s a unique machine capable of night flights and handling difficult terrain,” Duale stated.
