Ruto names Susan Koech as CBK Deputy Governor

She becomes CBK’s second female vice governor.

Susan Jemutai Koech has been appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya by President William Ruto.

She becomes CBK’s second female vice governor. Ten additional candidates were considered for the position.

William Ruto nominated her for the position in February, and the National Assembly Finance and Planning Committee vetted and approved her nomination.

Ruto announced the appointment in a notice published in the Gazette on March 10, 2023.

Ruto stated, “I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces, appoint Dr. Susan Jemtai Koech as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya for a four-year term.”

Moi University awarded Koech a doctorate in business administration.

She previously served as the Principal Secretary for the Tourism and Wildlife, East African Community, ASAL, and Regional Development ministries.

Before entering public service, the career bank served as the head of the Nairobi region for Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Group.

In the Kimwarer and Arror dams case, in which he and former Treasury PS Kamau Thugge were initially charged along with former Treasury CS Henry Rotich for the alleged loss of billions of shillings, Koech became a state witness in early 2021.

Koech told MPs during her vetting that she will attempt to reintroduce an interest rate cap to reduce the cost of credit and help establish a robust interbank forex market.
