Why You’ll Not be Able to Buy Tokens on Sunday, Monday – Kenya Power

Kenya Power issued a warning to Kenyan citizens, advising them to purchase their electricity tokens in advance of an upcoming maintenance scheduled to commence on the night of Sunday, June 2nd.

As outlined in a statement acquired by Gossipa2z.com, the utility provider clarified that the token distribution system would be inaccessible from 10:00 PM on Sunday, June 2nd, until 10:00 PM on Monday, June 3rd.

During this maintenance period, customers will be unable to procure tokens via mobile money services, banking outlets, or Kenya Power offices, as detailed in the notice provided.

Kenya Power emphasized the necessity for customers to procure adequate tokens to cover their electricity needs beyond Sunday, June 3rd, advising them accordingly.

The company, listed under the ticker KPLC on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, disclosed that approximately 6.8 million prepaid customers, as of January, were expected to be impacted by this directive.

Additionally, Kenya Power indicated that it services 2.1 million postpaid customers, generating Ksh120 billion in revenue, constituting 63% of its total earnings.

Despite a majority of large-scale power consumers favoring the postpaid option, Kenya Power plans to phase out this service and transition all customers to the prepaid system.

A report by Kenya Power outlined that rural customers will eventually migrate to smart metering systems, aligning with the company’s long-term strategy.

This maintenance initiative follows a technical issue experienced by the company in January, resulting in a 15-hour service disruption attributed to mobile money system malfunctions, impacting prepaid customers’ ability to purchase electricity tokens.
