Nassir, Mombasa Governor, Shuns WhatsApp & Other Social Media Sites, Prefers Kabambe: Here’s Why

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir made a revelation on Monday, May 27, stating that he refrains from using any social media platforms, including WhatsApp.

During an interview with Spice FM, Governor Nassir explained that this choice aids him in maintaining focus on delivering effective service.ย

The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) expressed concern that social media platforms can potentially influence politicians through emotional sway.

Nassir clarified his stance, emphasizing that his decision to abstain from social media is deliberate. He pointed out thatย evenย possessingย a basicย mobile phone (“kabambe”) wouldn’t alter his approach as he doesn’t utilize WhatsApp.

Furthermore, Nassir shared that he has discussed his detachment from social media with close associates, including family members, stressing the importance of maintaining emotional resilience in leadership decision-making.

Despite his avoidance of social media, Nassir’s official Facebook and X accounts remain active and verified, although it’s unclear if these are managed by his communications team.

Nassir addressed the public at a time when he implemented a ban on the sale and distribution of muguka in Mombasa, a decision he acknowledged as a political gamble he was willing to take.

He asserted that despite criticism of the ban as a unilateral action, it had garnered significant support from Mombasa politicians and the County Assembly, as well as the majority of Members of Parliament, with only one dissenting.

Beyond Mombasa, neighboring Coastal counties such as Taita Taveta and Kilifi have also instituted bans on the stimulant, while Kwale has opted to increase levies on its sale.
