Senator Predicts Rift: Ruto Eyes Running Mate for 2027 Elections if Current War Persists
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has suggested that President William Ruto might opt for a different running mate in 2027 if the current internal conflicts within the government persist beyond the upcoming year.
Onyonka pointed out that should the ongoing disputes within Kenya’s Kwanza government continue, it would likely follow a historical trend where the relationship between a president and deputy president turns sour.
According to Onyonka, this scenario would result in both Gachagua and Ruto parting ways before the 2027 elections.
During an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, Onyonka expressed, “If this conflict persists into next year, Gachagua will depart, and William Ruto will follow suit.”
He further raised questions about whether Gachagua or Ruto would seek support from Western Kenya to select a new vice president, and what the fate of that vice president would be if Ruto secures a second term, pondering the possibility of betrayal.

Onyonka’s comments coincide with rumors of internal discord within the Kenya Kwanza government.
In response, Gachagua sought to reassure the public on Sunday, emphasizing that he and the president maintain a positive relationship.
“Tupendane tuungane tuishi kwa amani, sisi sote ni wa Kenya na tukifanya namna hio tutaishi vizuri. Hio ndio Rais ametuongoza. Mimi na Rais tunafanya kazi nzuri, tunapendana tunapanga kazi yetu. Amenipatia kazi mingi hata ingine inanishinda, ameniwezesha kuendelea na kazi yangu kwa hivyo serikali yetu iko imara tunaendelea na kazi,” Gachagua said.
(Let us love each other, unite, and live in peace, we are all Kenyans and if we are like that, we shall live happily. That is what our President has taught us. President Ruto and I are doing a great job, we love each other and we are planning our work accordingly. He has given me a lot of work to deliver and some even become overwhelming, but he has enabled me to work effectively. The government is solid and we are progressing well.)
