Former Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta Leads African Union Mission for South African Elections

Former Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in South Africa to oversee the country’s upcoming general elections as the leader of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM).

The AUEOM, which includes the retired Head of State, will monitor the elections scheduled for May 29, 2024.

Upon arrival on Thursday, May 23, the team, sanctioned by the African Union Commission (AUC), will engage with South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and other election observation missions present for the event.

The deployment of the Mission was authorized by AUC chairperson Moussa Faki following an invitation from the South African government.

In a statement, AUC highlighted the invitation extended by the South African government and the IEC, with H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, approving the Mission’s deployment to evaluate and report on the election proceedings.

Led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, the AUEOM comprises 60 short-term observers (STOs) drawn from various sectors, including African Union-accredited ambassadors, election management body officials, civil society representatives, election experts, human rights advocates, gender and media specialists, and youth organization representatives.

The assessment conducted by Uhuru’s team will be based on South Africa’s electoral legal framework and the OAU/AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections.

Following the observation, the Mission will present its preliminary findings and recommendations during a press conference in Johannesburg on May 31.

A comprehensive final report will be issued within two months after the announcement of the final election results and will be made available on the AU Commission website, as stated by the AUC.
