Raila Odinga’s Oxford Tour and AUC Candidacy: A Narrative of Resilience and Renewal
Opposition leader Raila Odinga, who departed the country on Wednesday, embarked on a tour of the Rhodes House at Oxford University. Alongside him were Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Jared Okello.
In a social media post on X, Raila expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Kenya Mission UK, under the leadership of acting High Commissioner Edwin Afande and his team. Senator Edwin Sifuna and Honorable Jared Okello were also present during the visit.
During his visit, Raila engaged with Kenyan postgraduate students pursuing their studies at Oxford.
A statement from the Azimio la Umoja coalition, conveyed through spokesperson Dennis Onyango, revealed that Raila’s presence in the European nation was at the invitation of the Oxford Africa Society.

According to the statement, Raila is slated to deliver a lecture titled “Forging Africa’s Future: A Journey of Resilience and Renewal” at the annual event. Onyango emphasized that in his lecture, Raila will draw upon his extensive experience in public service and advocacy to explore Africa’s journey of resilience and renewal.
The spokesperson further outlined that Raila’s address will encompass crucial themes such as political stability, economic growth, equity, democracy, and social cohesion. He will spotlight stories of resilience and examples of renewal from various corners of the African continent.
Raila, leader of the ODM party, has officially announced his candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) seat. The election, scheduled for February 2025, will determine the successor to Chad’s Moussa Faki, whose term is nearing its end.
