Siaya Governor Orengo Regrets Deputy Selection: A Political Saga Unveiled
Siaya Governor James Orengo expressed regret for disregarding advice from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga concerning the selection of William Oduol as his deputy.
Orengo, accompanied by his deputy, addressed the Senate Devolution Committee on May 22, responding to concerns regarding the treatment of Oduol, who had been reinstated by the Senate in June 2023 following his impeachment by the county assembly.
“I regret not heeding the counsel provided by ODM party Leader Raila Odinga and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga against appointing Oduol as my running mate in the 2022 General Election,” Orengo stated.
The governor conveyed to the committee that reconciliation with his deputy was unattainable.
Orengo informed Committee Chair Sheikh Abbas that William Oduol had failed to acknowledge his affiliation with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and commit to adhering to party regulations.

“I faced repercussions immediately after the election during the brief period I entrusted him with county responsibilities as I pursued Railaโs presidential election petition,” he revealed.
He elaborated on the dilemma he faced, indicating that accepting Oduol’s collaboration would be met with resistance from residents due to Siaya’s firm allegiance to ODM, a party Orengo alleged the deputy governor had disavowed.
The saga in Siaya County unfolded in May 2023 when 38 MCAs endorsed the motion for Oduol’s removal from office, citing allegations of gross misconduct.
Subsequently, the Senate overturned the county assembly’s decision to impeach Oduol, thereby reinstating him to his position.
Oduol had accused Orengo of misappropriating county funds, unveiling instances where substantial amounts were withdrawn from the county treasury without adhering to proper protocols.
