President William Ruto is currently undertaking a significant state visit to the United States, marking a crucial juncture in Kenya-US relations.
During his time in Washington, President Ruto will be accommodated at the prestigious Blair House, known as the official lodging for visiting dignitaries and located adjacent to the White House.
Blair House, historically the residence of journalist Francis Preston Blair, was acquired by the US government in 1942 to serve as an official guest house for notable international figures.
Throughout its history, Blair House has welcomed esteemed guests such as Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II, French President Charles de Gaulle, and Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, underscoring its significance in diplomatic relations.
Blair House offers a remarkable accommodation experience with its extensive layout comprising over 120 rooms across four interconnected townhouses, blending antique furnishings with modern amenities to ensure guests’ comfort.
Each room is thoughtfully appointed, and the residence features various dining areas, meeting spaces, and private suites adorned with period furnishings and artworks.

The personalized service at Blair House caters to guests’ individual needs, from customized dining options to tailored schedules accommodating diplomatic obligations, complemented by tranquil outdoor spaces for relaxation and informal discussions.
Beyond its opulent accommodations, Blair House holds historical significance, serving as a residence for US Presidents-elect during transition periods and bearing witness to a foiled assassination attempt on President Harry S. Truman in 1950.
A significant restoration in the late 1980s preserved Blair House’s heritage while updating its facilities to modern standards, resulting in 14 guest rooms, formal dining and conference rooms, fully equipped kitchens, a beauty salon, an exercise room, and a laundry facility.
Previously, visiting dignitaries would spend a single night at the White House before relocating to hotels or embassies, highlighting Blair House’s role as the official guest house of the US President.
