Ruto’s Light-Hearted Moment: “Speak Slowly,” He Tells Kenyan Lady in US “Punguza Tweng”(Video)
Kenyans living in the US had a lighthearted moment on Monday when President William Ruto interrupted a woman asking him a question.
During his state visit to the US, Ruto had to stop the woman, noting that her English was too fast for him to comprehend.
“Excuse me, madam, your English is a bit (laughs)… Can you maybe try Swahili?” he suggested.
“Ama kidogo upunguze the tweng, imenipita kidogo. I’m sorry (Or you can reduce the tweng (the typical sound of the speech of people from a certain place)).”
The woman then spoke more slowly, even asking “Is that slow enough?” which drew laughter from the audience.
After she finished her question, the President requested clarification, admitting, “I had to get a translation, but now I understand what you mean.”

Ruto met with Kenyans living in the US at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta on the first day of his state visit to America.
He discussed Kenya’s electricity and last-mile connectivity program, which has been in progress for the last 10 years.
He mentioned that by 2024, 10 million households in Kenya are connected to electricity.
“This year, we have allocated Sh12 billion in our budget towards the last-mile connectivity program,” he said.
Ruto then apologized for initially not understanding the woman’s question.
“Forgive me if I didn’t understand you. Your English confused me a bit, but it’s okay,” Ruto remarked.
