Key Facts about Mohammad Mokhber: Iran’s Interim President

Here are some significant details regarding Mohammad Mokhber, aged 68, who assumed the role of interim president of Iran following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Ebrahim Raisi, the former president.

In his capacity as interim president, Mokhber is part of a tripartite council, comprising the parliamentary speaker and the judiciary head, tasked with organizing a new presidential election within 50 days of Raisi’s demise.

Born on September 1, 1955, Mokhber shares a close relationship with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, wielding considerable influence over state affairs, akin to his predecessor Raisi.

Mokhber ascended to the position of first vice president in 2021 following Raisi’s presidential victory.

In October, Mokhber was among a delegation of Iranian officials who visited Moscow, where agreements were made to furnish Russia’s military with additional surface-to-surface missiles and drones, as reported by Reuters. Notable attendees included high-ranking members from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and a representative from the Supreme National Security Council.

Previously, Mokhber served as the head of Setad, an investment fund associated with the supreme leader.

In 2010, Mokhber found himself on the European Union’s list of sanctioned individuals and entities due to alleged involvement in activities related to nuclear or ballistic missiles. However, he was later delisted in 2012.

In 2013, the US Treasury Department sanctioned Setad and its oversight of 37 affiliated companies.

Setad, formally known as Setad Ejraiye Farmane Hazrate Emam or the Headquarters for Executing the Order of the Imam, was established under a decree issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei’s predecessor. It was tasked with managing and selling properties purportedly abandoned following the tumultuous period following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with the majority of proceeds directed towards charitable endeavors.
