Atwoli: Bukhungu III Set to Rattle Kenya’s Political Landscape

The Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), Francis Atwoli, asserts that the forthcoming gathering of leaders hailing from Western Kenya at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County will have profound implications for the nation’s political arena.

Dubbed ‘Bukhungu III’, this assembly, the third of its kind, is principally aimed at upholding Luhya solidarity and reaching pivotal political resolutions through consensus.

Atwoli, who is spearheading the initiative, contends that the Luhya populace is firmly united in purpose, implying that the resolutions emanating from the conference will wield significant influence over the trajectory of national politics.

Atwoli stated that the notion of Luhya disunity is unfounded, asserting that historically and presently, the Luhyas remain undivided. He emphasized that occasional dissent within such a large community is to be expected but does not signify a lack of unity, noting that the community, comprising over 10 million individuals, is, in fact, more cohesive than ever before.

“I always communicate to my constituents that one day I will witness the inauguration of a President from the Luhya community. This conviction is what fuels our determination to host the Bukhungu III event, which we believe will significantly impact Kenya’s political landscape. As leaders, our focus is on fostering greater unity and solidarity among the Mulembe people.”

Atwoli made these remarks during an event on Saturday, where he accompanied Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to pay respects at the funeral service of Mama Rose Nabalayo Mudavadi, held in Shiveye, Kakamega County.

The gathering was attended by various prominent figures, including former Attorney General Amos Wako, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, Vihiga Deputy Governor Wilberforce Kitiezo, Vihiga Women Representative Beatrice Adagala, as well as Members of Parliament Omboko Milemba and Fred Ikana, alongside former MP Alfred Agoi.

In a statement released to the media by the Prime CS’ press team, the assembled leaders affirmed their unified stance, expressing their full support for Musalia Mudavadi’s leadership role as the paramount figure in Western Kenya. They emphasized Mudavadi’s positive intentions towards the Mulembe people and the nation as a whole.

The Bukhungu III declaration follows closely after the contentious Limuru III gathering conducted on Friday by a faction of leaders from the Mt. Kenya region, aiming to strategize the community’s future direction.

These leaders introduced the HAKI coalition, purporting to advocate for the region’s concerns and solidarity, with former President Uhuru Kenyatta as their affirmed spokesperson.

However, the assembly faced considerable backlash, including from supporters of President William Ruto, who criticized it as a polarizing tactic to advance an agenda and undermine the current government.

The previous Bukhungu assembly occurred in December 2021, during which a resolution was made to endorse opposition leader Raila Odinga’s presidential candidacy in the 2022 elections.
