Babu Owino Urges Raila: One Final Maandamano Before AU Departure
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has urged Azimio leader Raila Odinga to spearhead a fresh series of protests if the Finance Bill, 2024 is imposed on Kenyan citizens.
This bill outlines tax measures the Kenya Kwanza administration aims to implement to generate revenue for its ambitious initiatives.
Babu Owino expressed concern that the tax propositions put forward by President William Ruto would exacerbate the hardships faced by Kenyans who are already struggling.
“Raila Odinga, Kenyans are in distress. There are impending tax hikes, and they are burdensome. Taxes are being levied on various aspects of livelihoods – from avocados in your backyard to poultry farming, even owning a car incurs taxes. Now, they’re considering taxing bread too,” he remarked.
Babu appealed to Raila to heed the grievances of the Kenyan populace and lead them to oppose the suggested tax measures.

“Baba, before you embark on your AU duties, kindly organize a demonstration so we can address this issue,” he implored.
Azimio la Umoja has already instructed its members to reject the Finance Bill, 2024. The coalition, under the leadership of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, decried the proposed taxes outlined in the bill as harsh, cautioning that they could plunge Kenyans further into poverty.
Kalonzo, the former Vice President, insisted that the bill must be opposed and warned of nationwide protests if it is forced through Parliament.
“As a coalition, we are prepared to take to the streets if necessary. I urge you to stand firm. Be prepared, everyone,” Kalonzo asserted. “If you’re feeling a bit feeble and think you can’t endure another wave of protests, fortify yourselves because we need your support, and this nation needs you.”
The Finance Bill, 2024 was officially released on May 9 and is slated for public consultation. Members of the public have until May 28 to provide their feedback on the proposed measures.
