Mount Kenya’s Political Crown: Gachagua and Kuria Omitted from Leader Selection
Leaders from Mt Kenya convened on Friday, May 17, and made a collective decision to uphold former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the key figure in guiding the region’s political trajectory leading up to the 2027 General Election.
Known as Limuru III, the gathering took place in Kabuku, aiming to address pertinent issues affecting the Mt Kenya area.
A diverse array of leaders participated in the meeting, including Martha Karua, the leader of the NARC-Kenya party, Jeremiah Kioni, who serves as the Secretary General of Jubilee, Gathoni Wamuchomba, the MP for Githunguri, Ndiritu Muriithi, the former governor of Laikipia, and Ferdinand Waititu, the former governor of Kiambu, among others.
They collectively affirmed their commitment to regard Uhuru Kenyatta as the preeminent figure representing Mt Kenya until his official resignation from the position.
Throughout the deliberations, the leaders emphasized the importance of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta coming together to convene a meeting, aiming to reach a consensus on the region’s course of action leading up to the imminent elections.
Wachira Kiago, the chairman of the Kikuyu Council of Elders, highlighted the region’s perceived failure to fully support Uhuru, particularly in rejecting the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which included the crucial “one man one shilling one vote” principle.
“He consistently stood by our region and made extra efforts to ensure our needs were addressed,” he remarked, referring to the support given by the Mount Kenya people. “But when he advocated for the BBI, we didn’t stand behind him.”

“He had asked the elders to assist him in promoting the BBI because he believed that if it passed, it would benefit the Mount Kenya region after his departure.”
He emphasized the importance of the region coming together, regardless of political affiliations, to present a unified voice on political and economic matters concerning Mount Kenya.
Former political candidate George Maara echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the region had no plans to replace one leader with another.
“We acknowledge only one prominent figure as the leader of our community, and that’s Uhuru Kenyatta. He currently holds the position of authority in the Mt Kenya region, and he’ll relinquish this status when he sees fit,” he declared.
“The purpose of this gathering isn’t to appoint a new leader in Mt Kenya, but rather to facilitate discussions among the people, focusing primarily on issues like the one man one vote, one shilling. Our region already has a leader in Uhuru Kenyatta,” he added.
Kioni, serving as the moderator for the meeting, disclosed that Uhuru wasn’t directly involved in the organization of the event. However, he assured attendees that another meeting would be arranged to gather all the leaders from the Mt Kenya area.
