Exclusive Insights: Raila & Museveni’s Nairobi Meeting

Azimio leader Raila Odinga engaged in discussions with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday.

Afterward, Raila bid farewell to President Museveni, who had completed a three-day state visit to Kenya.

Raila shared that he and Museveni revisited the vision of a unified East African Community.

In February, Museveni endorsed Railaโ€™s candidacy for the African Union chair position.

Raila expressed gratitude to Museveni for his ongoing support of his AU chair bid.

“I held discussions with and saw off President Yoweri Museveni who has been on a state visit to Kenya. We revisited our dream of a united East African Community (Jumuiya). I thank him for the continued support of my African Union Commission candidature,” Raila stated.

Raila was accompanied by Roads and Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen.

Murkomen posted pictures on Facebook of the farewell to Museveni.

“During the visit, President William Ruto and President Museveni discussed and signed several bilateral agreements, including MoUs on trade and transport infrastructure development,” Murkomen shared.

He also noted that the two leaders stressed the need to extend the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Malaba, Kampala, and the DRC for efficient regional transport.

“As a Ministry, we are committed, along with our partnerย states’ย ministers, to taking measures and mobilizing resources for implementing regional shared infrastructure,”ย he added.

On Thursday, Kenya and Uganda signed seven Memoranda of Understanding to strengthen their bilateral relations.

President William Ruto emphasized that Kenya and Uganda are closely united by a shared history, culture, and common goals for regional peace and prosperity.

One MoU signed focused on cooperation between Foreign Service institutions, ensuring knowledge exchange and harmonization of diplomatic training structures.

Another MoU on Public Service Management and Development aims to improve service delivery between the two countries.

“In addition, an MoU to facilitate cooperation in youth affairs has been signed, which helps both countries implement innovative policies and programs for the youth,” Ruto stated.

The President also highlighted the signing of an MoU on sports cooperation, demonstrating the importance both nations place on sports promotion, development, and investment.

He noted the MoUโ€™s timely relevance as both countries prepare to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations.

Ruto added that the two countries now have a framework for strategic cooperation in education, training, scientific research, SMEs,ย andย gender equality andย women’sย empowerment.
