Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has given security officials in Mombasa a three-week deadline to address the persistent street robberies and criminal activities perpetrated by juvenile gangs in the city.

The CS mentioned that even though security agencies in Mombasa are intensifying efforts against youth gangs who rob unsuspecting residents, these incidents must be completely eradicated.

“I have instructed the officers to thoroughly investigate this issue, and I will return in three weeks. I don’t want to hear about a single mugging or street crime,” said Prof Kindiki.

Three weeks ago, a CCTV video went viral, showing a group of youths mugging shoppers on Haile Selassie Avenue in the city’s central business district.

The incident, which ignited a heated discussion about the insecurity in Mombasa, was just one of many that police say often go unreported, making it challenging to prosecute suspects when they are caught.

Besides the CBD, residents in some areas of Likoni, Kisauni, Nyali, and Mvita sub-counties have also been affected by frequent attacks from gangs of youths, some as young as 13, usually armed with knives and machetes.

Recognizing Mombasa as an important economic and tourist hub, CS Kindiki emphasized that his ministry will deploy all necessary resources to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the county.

He stated that Kenya is a nation of law and order, and therefore, no one should commit crimes and escape justice.

“We must find a way to stop these young boys from terrorizing residents,” added Prof Kindiki.

The Interior CS made these remarks at the Mombasa port on Tuesday, May 14, after inspecting armored personnel carriers (APCs) imported for use by police officers.
