Jimmy Kibaki Resigns From Active Politics After 33 Years to Focus on Family and Business

Former President Mwai Kibaki’s son, Jimmy Kibaki, resigned from his position as the deputy leader of The New Democrats Party on Wednesday, a role he had held for three years.

In a statement obtained by Gossipa2z.com, Jimmy explained that he was stepping down to concentrate on pressing family and business issues.

He noted that this decision came after careful consideration, highlighting his family’s long-standing involvement in politics.

Up to this point, Jimmy Kibaki had been seen as the potential successor to his father’s political legacy after the late president’s decade-long leadership in Kenya.

“For the past 33 years, I have actively participated in various political endeavors in this country, including establishing and managing several political parties,” he mentioned.

“At this stage of my life, I realize that I must dedicate my full attention to pressing family and business matters. After much thought, reflection, and soul-searching, I find it necessary to resign immediately from my position as TND Deputy Party Leader.”

In his statement, the 60-year-old recalled his political beginnings in 1991 when he and like-minded individuals founded the Democratic Party of Kenya.

“Together, we developed this organization into a respected political party that performed well in the 1992 and 1997 general elections,” he noted.

Jimmy later joined the National Alliance Party of Kenya, which merged with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to form the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) in September 2002.

The founders included Mwai Kibaki, Raila Odinga, Charity Ngilu, and the late Vice President Kijana Wamalwa.

Led by Mwai Kibaki, the coalition won the presidency in the 2002 general election.

“I have alsoย been involved in establishing and managingย the Party of National Unity (PNU).ย More recently, in 2021, I joined the New Democrats (TND) political party, where I was appointed the Deputy Party Leader,” Jimmy stated.

Following his father’s death in April 2022, Jimmy had pledged to clarify his political ambitions and decide whether he would follow in his father’s footsteps.

“Now that I am the political face of the family, I might consider entering politics. We will discuss it after the sendoff; maybe next week we will have a detailed conversation,” he said during a 2022 media interview.
