‘Some Kenyans Moved Rivers to Build Houses, We Will Not Pay’ – Govt

Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga disclosed on Monday, May 13, that certain Kenyans had unlawfully altered the paths of rivers.

During an interview with Radio Citizen, Chidzuga noted that these individuals were now seeking compensation from the government after their homes were swept away by floods, compelling them to relocate to safer areas.ย

She indicated that although President William Rutoโ€™s administration had allocated funds for compensation, these particular individuals would not be eligible to benefit from it.

Chidzuga elaborated, stating, โ€œThere is a compensation whereby we have allocated Ksh39 Billion to deal with floods.โ€ However, she clarified that this money would only be accessible to Kenyans who had been deceived during the acquisition of title deeds.ย

She further detailed cases where Kenyans possessed valid land ownership documents obtained through fraudulent means.ย

Chidzuga also disclosed that this group of affected individuals would be provided with alternative settlement options or resources.

She raised the question, โ€œBut there are people who were told to move a river and they did. How do we handle those people?โ€

Explaining further, she revealed that these individuals knowingly transported soil from elsewhere and used it to alter the course of rivers, subsequently erecting permanent structures on the reclaimed land.ย

She asserted, โ€œIf you know you diverted a river, just move. We will not give you compensation to buy land in another place.โ€
