Gachagua Vows to Lead One Man One Shilling Campaign, Cites Mt Kenya Neglect

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua declared his intention on Sunday, May 12, to spearhead a campaign advocating for fair resource allocation through the principle of one man, one shilling.

This commitmentย was promptedย by Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire’s expression of concern over the inadequate funding received by the Mt Kenya region, including Embu, from the Nationalย Government,ย despite its substantial population.

The occasion for their remarks was the consecration of Bishop John Kimani Nthiga at the ACK Cathedral of St. Peter’s Mbeere in Siakago, Embu County.

Although Gachagua had opposed a similar formula during the previous administration, he asserted his strong support for the concept of one-man, one-vote, one-shilling.

Gachagua emphasized the correlation between population size, tax contributions, and the equitable distribution of resources, stating that areas with higher populations should receive a proportionate share.

He pointed out the disparity in funding allocation, citing instances where densely populated constituencies like Ruiruย were receivingย the same Constituency Development Fund (CDF) as areas with significantly lower populations.

Expressing his discontent with this inequality, Gachagua vowed to lead efforts to rectify it and ensure a fairer distribution of CDF resources.

He underscored the principle of fairness, emphasizing that the issue was not solely about representing a high-population region but about equitable resource distribution based on demographic realities.

Furthermore, Gachagua pledged to advocate for more regions in Mt Kenya toย be includedย as beneficiaries of the equalization fund, which supports the development of infrastructure and socioeconomic projects in marginalized counties.

Governor Mbarire had earlier highlighted Embu’s exclusion from equalization funds despite its classification as Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL).

Gachagua assured that steps wereย being takenย to address this oversight, indicating that additionalย constituencies in Mt Kenya would be designated asย marginalized to qualify for equalization fund benefits.
