ODM Establishes 9-Member Disaster Response Team to Address Flood Crisis

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led by Raila Odinga, announced on Thursday, May 9, that it had set up a committee to support the national government’s efforts in managing the flood crisis.

ODM expressed solidarity with the flood disaster victims and said the party had created a nine-person Disaster Response Team to oversee aid and coordination efforts for the ongoing crisis.

The team members include Eddy Gicheru, Nasra Nanda, Peter Imwatok, Mishi Mboko, Hamida Kibwana, Abbas Khalif, Catherine Omanyo, Benson Musungu, and James Nyikal.

In Nyanza, Raila’s base, the region will be represented by Gicheru, the current Migori senator, and Nyikal from Seme Constituency.

The committee’s initiatives in the Coast region will be headed by Mishi Mboko, the Likoni Member of Parliament.

Nairobi’s representatives on the committee include Nasra, an MCA, Imwatok, the Majority Leader, and Khalif, also an MCA.

Omanyo, the Woman Representative for Busia County, and Musungu, the youth director, are also part of the committee.

Raila formed the committee shortly after he mentioned that the party would lead fundraising efforts for flood victims.

In his message to ODM supporters, Raila noted that party leaders had already started organizing fundraising activities.

ODM’s efforts appear to be a separate initiative from the Azimio la Umoja coalition, which has also planned a similar approach.

On Wednesday, Wiper Leader and Azimio Principal Kalonzo Musyoka encouraged Kenyans to donate to provide more aid to flood victims beyond the Ksh10,000 provided by the national government.

Despite Raila’s leadership role in the Azimio coalition, he was notably absent from the press conference.
