Schools Spring Back: Classes Resume Monday, May 13
The government has declared that all schools will reopen after an extended closure prompted by the recent flooding.
State House officials stated that schools will officially resume on Monday, May 13, 2024.
The decision was announced after a private meeting where President William Ruto met with leaders from Laikipia and Kajiado.
“Schools will resume on Monday, May 13, 2024,” stated Secretary of State Functions, Mike Gitonga, quoting President William Ruto.

The order to reopen schools on Monday was based on recommendations from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Initially, schools were set to reopen on Monday, April 29, but Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu delayed the date due to the floods.
Machogu mentioned at the time that the reopening would be pushed back by a week because of safety issues caused by heavy rainfall.
Nevertheless, President William Ruto further postponed the school reopening as the rains had become more severe.
“The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the dates of reopening of all schools in the country for the second term until further notice,” Ruto announced during his national address on Friday, May 3.
