Raila Odinga’s AU Hopes Falter: OIC Backs Somalia’s Fawzia Yusuf
Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, has faced a significant setback in his attempt to become the African Union Commission (AUC) chairman.
How many member nations are in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation?
The former prime minister is up against strong competition from Somalia’s candidate, Fawzia Yusuf Adam.
In a recent update, Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, revealed that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) supports Somalia’s nomination of Fawzia for the AUC chairperson position for the 2025-2028 term.
Fiqi expressed that this is a major victory for Somalia since the OIC includes almost 30 African member states.

“Somalia values and thanks the OIC for recognizing and backing the nomination of Fawzia Yusuf Adam for the AU Chairperson role for 2025-2028,” Fiqi said.
If Fawzia secures the support of the 30 African Union member states, she would surpass other contenders, considering the AU consists of 55 member states.
Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, is also in contention for the same role, as the position is designated for Eastern African countries.
Why Kenya Kwanza leaders are upset with Raila
On the other hand, Raila’s unexpected critiques of President William Ruto’s government prompted responses from leaders and supporters of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Some individuals urged the president to reconsider his support for Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
