Raila Odinga’s Lawyer Reveals Why Most Kenyans Oppose His African Union Bid
The lead legal counsel for ODM leader Raila Odinga, Paul Mwangi, states that most Kenyans oppose Raila’s pursuit of a position at the African Union secretariat.
Raila aims to replace Chad’s Moussa Faki as the chairperson of the African Union Commission.
He announced his intention to seek the position in February this year.
Mwangi remarked that Raila’s pursuit of the AU role is not a crucial issue for him.
The lawyer explained that many Kenyans hope Raila fails in his bid to keep him focused on addressing domestic issues affecting the country.

“The AU job is not of utmost importance to Raila; he would not compromise his integrity for it. Moreover, numerous Kenyans would be relieved if Raila does not secure the position, seeing it as an answer to their prayers,” said Mwangi.
Mwangi was addressing Kericho senator Aaron Cheruiyot’s claim that Raila’s criticism of President William Ruto was harming his chances of becoming the next AUC chairperson.
On Friday, May 3, Raila harshly criticized President Ruto for alleged mismanagement and poor leadership during the recent flooding crisis.
Raila highlighted apparent leadership issues within the current administration during the disaster.
Cheruiyot argued that since President Ruto is essentially Raila’s main campaign supporter, Raila’s criticism of him was inappropriate.
“Raila’s current audience consists of African Presidents who will be crucial in his bid for the AUC role. Attacking Ruto, a leader they respect highly, may negatively impact their evaluation of Raila’s qualifications,” stated Cheruiyot.
