Former Harambee Stars Player in Police Custody Over Alleged Murder, Rape

Collins Okoth, previously a player for Gor Mahia and the Harambee Stars, has been detained due to his alleged involvement in the murder of a three-year-old girl who was discovered deceased outside her mother’s residence in the Lucky Summer Estate of Nairobi’s Starehe Sub County.

Okoth is being held at the Pangani police station by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) while they investigate a murder.

The Lucky Summer Police Station (OB17/22/04/2024) received a report from Lucky Summer Assistant Chief Peris Muthoni, who notified the police that a child might have been murdered and their body discarded.

Authorities arrived at the location and determined that the child had bruises on her neck and was partially unclothed, suggesting she may have been sexually assaulted. The police suspect she was placed there after her death.

The child was discovered deceased, partially undressed, behind the apartment where she resided with her mother in a ground-floor residence.

The child’s mother left home at 1 a.m. and came back at 4 a.m. to discover that her child was gone. Another friend who lives with her in the house was also missing.

Police constable Gilbert Kiprotich from Starehe DCI offices informed a Makadara court that Okoth resided on the first floor of the building, and police apprehended him because he appeared uneasy afterย a weapon suspected of being used to break into the child’s mother’s home was found.

The soccer player is believed to have tossed an item through his window. He was taken into custody on April 23, 2024, and booked at Pangani police station under Occurrence Book (OB) number 132/23/04/2024.

โ€œThe respondent (Okoth) packed some of his belongings in the house and was prepared to vacate from the house. On 22,4,2024, at around 6ย amย Okoth left his house while carrying some of the clothes with a nylon paperย andย he came back hours later preparing to vacate the house,โ€ย the affidavit reads in part.

PC Kiprotich presented his claims to Senior Principal Magistrate Gregory Mutiso while requesting authorization to hold Okoth for 21 days during the investigation of a murder charge, which falls under section 203 in conjunction with section 204 of the Penal Code.

The detective stated that he was investigating the potential involvement of additional suspects in the murder case. He requires time to take statements from prosecution witnesses, collect mobile data records of suspects, and obtain CCTV footage from the crime scene for forensic examination.

Okoth will be taken to the Government Chemist for DNA testing and then to Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital for a psychological evaluation.

PC Kiprotich mentioned that Okoth is likely to flee since he was attempting to escape just before being apprehended.

The ex-Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia player did not oppose the request to keep him in custody for 21 days when he appeared before Mutiso last Thursday.

The matter willย be mentionedย on June 3, 2024.
