Kenya Police Deployment to Haiti Set for May 23

Nearly a year after Kenya pledged to send police officers to Haiti, the initial deployment to the troubled Caribbean nation is scheduled for May 23.

U.S. government officials report that the first group of Kenyan police officersย is expectedย to arrive by late May to address the gang-related unrest in the region.

The exact number of officers in the initial group has not been determined, but President William Ruto’s administration plans to deploy a total of 1,000 soldiers to Haiti.

Kenya and U.S. government insiders suggest that the initial flights arriving in Haiti on May 23 might be transporting 200 police officers.

As the deployment date approaches in less than a month, there are concerns regarding the housing arrangements for the officers from Kenya.

News reports state that the United States consented to build a base to accommodate the multinational force.

The Pentagon, part of the U.S. Defense Department, is now hurrying to have the facility ready within the next three weeks.

Benin security personnel, who have pledged to assist in calming the unrest in Haiti, are anticipated to join Kenyan police officers.

At the start, the Kenyan-led mission aimed primarily to establish peace in a nation that had been suffering from civil war for a long time.

The mission has shifted, with the new main goal being to assist Haiti in organizing free and fair elections.

To accomplish this goal, Kenya will collaborate with the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), which was established on Wednesday, April 24, following a suggestion from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

President William Ruto continues to express confidence that the mission will be successful.

โ€œKenya stands ready and willing concert with a broad alliance of nations in Africa and CARICOM- committed toย Haiti’sย stability, to rapidly execute the security support infrastructure envisaged under UN Security Council 2699 (2023),โ€ย Ruto stated on April 23.ย
